Leeds Magic Circle

About Us

The Leeds Magic Circle has its roots in the early 20th century, originally founded as the Leeds Magical Society in 1919. Spearheaded by Dr. J. N. Hawtin, the society quickly became a beacon for magical talent in Yorkshire. Notably progressive for its time, it welcomed female members as early as 1920, setting itself apart from many other magic clubs of the era. The society hosted prominent magicians such as Chris Charlton and Edward Victor, and its early membership included influential figures like Walter Cerretta Jeans.

In 1928, the society launched its first "Night of Magic," an annual public showcase that ran successfully for nearly 50 years. These events were instrumental in popularizing magic across Leeds and provided a platform for both amateur and professional performers. The society also cultivated young talent through a thriving junior section, which in the 1950s included future stars like Jon Gordon and Steve Walker. Members such as Ken Brooke and Harry Corbett contributed to the club’s growing prestige, blending performance with innovation.

During the 1980s, the Leeds Magical Society merged with the Leeds Magic Circle to form the Leeds Magical Association. This merger reflected a broader shift in the UK’s magic scene, allowing the organization to consolidate resources and expand its reach. The newly formed association continued to host lectures, competitions, and public performances, maintaining its commitment to education and entertainment. It became a cornerstone of the regional magic community, attracting members from across Yorkshire and beyond.

One of the most distinguished figures in the society’s history was Charles Roy Field, who joined in 1958 and served as president from 1962. A magician, historian, and librarian, Field was instrumental in preserving the legacy of Leeds’ magical heritage. His dedication to both performance and scholarship helped shape the society’s identity as a place where artistry and tradition meet. Today, the Leeds Magic Circle carries forward this rich legacy, offering a welcoming space for magicians of all backgrounds to share, learn, and inspire.
